Football has given fans countless unforgettable moments over the years, but few stories feel as extraordinary as the one connecting Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.
Nearly 19 years ago, a young Messi cradled and bathed a five-month-old baby during a charity photoshoot at Barcelona's Camp Nou. Today, that baby has grown into one of football's brightest stars, and the two are preparing to face each other in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
What was once a charity event has become one of football's most heartwarming full-circle moments, bringing together one of the greatest players the sport has ever seen and the young talent many believe could define its future.
The story began in 2007 when UNICEF organised a charity campaign in Rocafonda, a neighbourhood in Mataro, Spain. Families entered a raffle for the chance to take part in a special photoshoot with a Barcelona first-team player. Yamal's family won.
At the time, Messi was only 20 years old and already emerging as one of Barcelona's brightest talents. During the photoshoot, organised by Diario Sport, photographer Joan Monfort captured a series of unforgettable images showing Messi holding, smiling at and even bathing baby Lamine Yamal in a small plastic tub inside the Barcelona dressing room.
Monfort later recalled that Messi, known for being shy in his younger days, initially seemed uncomfortable with the unusual assignment. But as the session continued, he naturally settled into the role.
For years, the photographs remained hidden in the archives. They only resurfaced after Yamal burst onto the football scene, quickly going viral as fans realised the symbolic passing of the torch between two generations of Barcelona stars.
Born on July 13, 2007, Yamal joined Barcelona's famous La Masia academy at the age of seven after beginning his football journey with local club CF La Torreta. His rise has been nothing short of phenomenal.
In April 2023, at just 15 years old, Yamal became the youngest player to debut for Barcelona's first team in the modern era. He soon broke more records, becoming the club's youngest La Liga starter and the fastest player to reach 50 first-team appearances.
By the 2025-26 season, Yamal had firmly established himself among the world's best young footballers. He helped Spain lift the UEFA Euro 2024 title, won multiple La Liga championships with Barcelona and inherited the club's iconic No. 10 jersey.
Despite becoming a global star himself, Yamal has never hidden his admiration for Messi. He has often described the Argentine legend as his idol and once revealed that one of his biggest dreams was to swap jerseys with Messi after facing Argentina in a World Cup final.
That dream is now about to come true. While Yamal represents football's next generation, Messi continues to prove why he is regarded as one of the greatest players in history.
Approaching his 40th birthday, the Argentine captain once again guided his nation to another World Cup final after leading them to victory over England.
