Long before he became one the Kollywood’s biggest star and eventually the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar was a young boy growing up in a middle-class household with dreams, laughter, and family around him.
Over the years, audiences have watched Vijay portray some of Tamil cinema's most memorable protective brothers in films such as Thirupaachi, Sivakasi, Velayudham, and many others. His characters were often fiercely loyal, deeply emotional, and willing to sacrifice everything for their siblings.
For many fans, those performances felt unusually genuine. According to his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, there was a reason for that.
In a recent interview with Thanthi TV, Shoba Chandrasekhar opened up about a painful chapter in the family's life, the death of Vijay's younger sister, Vidhya, in 1984 when she was just two years old.
She recalled that before the tragedy, Vijay was a cheerful, energetic child who was constantly talking, playing, and creating mischief around the house.
"Until then, Vijay had been a jolly, lively child," she said. "But my daughter's death changed him and the rest of the family as well."
The change was noticeable as in once-talkative boy became much quieter after losing his sister. His school teachers reportedly observed that he would become emotional whenever the topic of sisters was discussed in class.
For a child, losing a sibling at such a young age is something difficult to understand. Yet the experience left a deep mark on Vijay's personality and emotional world.
The tragedy became even more difficult because Vijay's father, filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar, was away for a film shoot when it happened. The family had to endure the heartbreaking loss while he was away.
Shoba Chandrasekhar shared that the entire family was affected, and the grief remained with them for years.
Perhaps this is why Vijay's on-screen portrayals of brotherhood have always resonated so strongly with audiences. Whether he was protecting a sister, standing up for family, or sacrificing for loved ones, there was often an emotional sincerity that viewers connected with instantly.
Despite his later stardom, Vijay's childhood was rooted in ordinary middle-class life. His mother revealed that before S.A. Chandrasekhar fully entered filmmaking, it was her income from singing that helped support the household. Like many parents, they hoped their son would pursue a stable and respected profession.
"We wanted Vijay to become a doctor," she said. "That wish became even stronger after we lost our daughter."
But Vijay had different dreams. For many years, he wanted to become a pilot. It was only later that acting entered his life and changed his future completely.
Interestingly, he eventually fulfilled both dreams in his own way, portraying a doctor in Mersal and a pilot in Beast, while also becoming one of Tamil cinema's most beloved stars.
Looking back, fans may now see Vijay's famous brother roles differently. The protective elder brother who would fight the world for his family was not just a cinematic image. It was a role that carried echoes of real emotions, real memories, and a loss that had touched his life at a very young age.
Perhaps that is why audiences connected so deeply with those performances. Because behind the hero, there was once a young boy who knew what it meant to lose a sister and carry that memory quietly through the years.
