Many Malaysians believe that a certain career path, which apparently does not require formal education, is influencing students' decisions. According to a report by BERNAMA, the trend of students choosing not to sit for their SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) exams has been attributed to social media influencers promoting the notion that education, and specifically SPM certification, is unnecessary for achieving success and wealth.

Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim, Chairperson of the Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE), expressed concerns that students are being swayed by these "attractive career paths," such as becoming influencers, due to a lack of proper guidance. She stated, "These students view becoming influencers as a shortcut to earning money without the need for education or qualifications. Some even believe they can forgo SPM because they can earn a decent income as food delivery riders."

She further emphasized that skipping the SPM examinations after completing Standard 1 through Form 5 is a significant loss. However, for individuals who lack interest, academic inclination, and proper guidance, this period merely represents a phase in their life journey.

In September 2023, a doctor and guest speaker experienced a startling revelation when a hall full of Form 3 students expressed their ambitions to become TikTokers and YouTubers. The speaker highlighted the instability of relying solely on such careers, explaining, "Being a TikToker isn’t a job! Those who do business on TikTok are entrepreneurs like Khairul Aming. They are not just TikTokers; they are businessmen. Those who do business can use platforms like TikTok and Facebook to generate sales. Those who work can use these platforms for side incomes."

She warned of the inherent instability in such a career, noting that while income might be high at one moment, it could disappear the next, leaving influencers without earnings for months. She also pointed out that influencers often face unrealistic demands for free reviews, attending fashion shows, modeling, and creating content without compensation.
