Delivery Rider’s Heartbreak After Overhearing a Parent’s Remark

A few words spoken casually can sometimes stay with someone much longer than we realise.

That was the experience of a food delivery rider named Muaz, who was left hurt and confused after overhearing a parent use his job as an example of what their child should avoid becoming.

Muaz was waiting alone at a food outlet when he overheard a parent talking to their child. According to messages later shared by his younger sister on Threads, the parent encouraged the child to study hard and make their family proud. But then, the parent reportedly pointed towards Muaz and told the child not to end up like him, describing food delivery work as difficult and referring to him as a “kuli” or labourer.

For Muaz, the words came unexpectedly. What seemed like a passing comment to someone else left him questioning why honest work should ever be something to be ashamed of. He told his sister that he was not angry. Instead, he was simply confused and hurt that someone would look down on the work he was doing to earn money.

“I felt like they were insulting the work I do to make money like this,” he shared with his sister.

His sister was saddened when she read his messages and decided to speak up.

She reminded people that we never truly know what someone is going through, what circumstances brought them to their current job or how hard they may be working simply to put food on the table.

A job may look ordinary from the outside, but behind every delivery is a person giving their time, energy and effort to earn an honest living.

The story resonated with many Malaysians, with people pointing out that parents can encourage their children to study and work towards their dreams without putting down someone else's profession.

Some also shared that they would rather teach their children to respect people who work hard for a living, regardless of what uniform they wear or what job they do.

And perhaps that is the bigger lesson behind Muaz's experience.

Success does not always look the same for everyone.

Some people work in offices. Some work behind counters. Some drive for hours. Some deliver food under the heat and rain. Some take on whatever work is available because they have responsibilities waiting for them at home.

There is dignity in every honest effort.

Muaz may have been delivering someone's meal that day, but he was also doing something many people quietly do every day, working hard to earn his own money and make a living.

And perhaps before we teach our children to dream bigger, we should also teach them something equally important:

Never measure a person's worth by the job they do. Because every honest worker has a story we may know nothing about.
