Janaki : A Former Nurse, 62 Rescued Dogs, and a Promise She Refused to Break

For most people, retirement is a time to slow down. For Janaki, it became the beginning of a different kind of calling.

A former nurse in her 60s, Janaki spent years caring for people. Today, her compassion is devoted to another group often overlooked 62 stray dogs who found safety, comfort and love in her presence.

For more than four years, Janaki became a familiar face around Jinjang. Day after day, she would make her rounds, feeding stray dogs, checking on their well-being and ensuring they never went hungry. What began as simple acts of kindness gradually turned into an unbreakable bond.

"These dogs aren't strays to me. They're friends who found me when no one else would stop to see them," she said.

Earlier this year, everything changed. The land the dogs had called home was cleared for redevelopment, leaving Janaki with an impossible challenge. She suddenly had to find a safe place for all 62 dogs before they were forced back onto the streets.

Walking away was never an option. Determined to protect every one of them, she sought help. Animal welfare organisation Pawtarian and content creator Sidney Rayos Michael quickly stepped forward, joining forces to rescue the dogs.

Together, they successfully relocated all 62 dogs to temporary boarding facilities across the Klang Valley, giving them a safe place to stay while a more permanent solution is being worked on.

For Janaki, these animals are far more than rescue cases.

"They've become part of my life," she shared. "Giving them up was never an option."

Her dedication doesn't end there. Pawtarian is currently building a 2.1-acre animal sanctuary in Klang that will one day provide a permanent refuge for up to 400 rescued dogs, cats and other abandoned animals.

The sanctuary is designed to offer more than just shelter. It will provide proper medical care, clean living spaces and a safe environment where rescued animals can finally experience stability, dignity and a second chance at life.

Sometimes, it quietly shows up every single day with bags of dog food, gentle hands and a promise never to abandon those who have no one else.

For 62 dogs, one former nurse became their family. And today, with a little help from the community, their journey toward a forever home continues.
