Former MIC President, Datuk Seri G. Palanivel, passed away peacefully at 8am this morning at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital. He was 76.

Born on 1 March 1949 in Penang, Datuk Seri Palanivel dedicated his life to public service, first as a researcher, then a journalist, and eventually as a long-serving politician and Cabinet minister.

His career began with the Lembah Bujang Project at the National Museum in 1973, before he joined Bernama in 1977. His work as a senior journalist and editor paved the way for his appointment as press secretary to then-Minister of Works, Tun S. Samy Vellu, in 1987.

Palanivel’s journey in politics started in the early 1970s through his involvement with the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC). In 1990, he won his first parliamentary seat for Hulu Selangor and went on to serve four consecutive terms until 2008.

He later returned to Parliament in 2013, representing the Cameron Highlands constituency. Over the years, he served in various ministerial roles including as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (2013–2015), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (2011–2013), and held deputy ministerial portfolios in welfare, rural development, and plantation industries.

In December 2010, he was appointed as the 8th President of MIC, leading the party through a pivotal phase.

Datuk Seri G. Palanivel will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his calm demeanour, and his contributions to both the media and political landscapes of Malaysia.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and all who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
