A Malaysian solo traveller has captured the attention of social media users after revealing that she spent only around RM3,500 on transportation while travelling overland from Malaysia all the way to Europe.

The traveller, who documents her adventures on Instagram under the name [Travel With Sparrow] shared a video breaking down the trains and buses she used throughout her remarkable journey from Penang to Poland.

The video quickly gained traction online, amassing more than one million views as viewers became fascinated by how such an extensive journey could be achieved at a relatively affordable cost.

According to her post, the route took her from Malaysia through Thailand and Laos into China, before continuing onwards to Mongolia and Russia, eventually reaching parts of Central Europe including Estonia and Poland.

While many were impressed by the low travel cost, she explained that she did not always choose the cheapest option available. Instead, she occasionally prioritised comfort, especially for long-distance journeys.

For example, although older train services in Thailand could cost as little as RM33, she opted for a newer and more comfortable train from Bangkok to Nong Khai, which cost around RM130.

She also revealed that she often selected sleeper trains instead of standard seat-only tickets, allowing her to rest properly during overnight travel.

The traveller noted that those willing to sacrifice comfort could potentially reduce their transport costs even further. One example she shared was her direct train from Beijing to Mongolia, which cost her RM776. However, she explained that an alternative combination of trains and buses could have reduced the cost to approximately RM177.

Beyond the numbers, many viewers were equally inspired by her personal story.

In her posts, she described herself as an ordinary Malaysian who did not come from a wealthy background. She said her journey began simply from a deep passion for travelling rather than privilege or luxury.

Today, she has travelled to more than 50 countries and recently achieved a major personal milestone by visiting Antarctica just before turning 30.

Reflecting on her experiences, she encouraged others not to let fear, finances, or societal expectations stop them from pursuing their dreams.

“Don’t set limits for yourself. Don’t let money, status, gender, nationality, or society’s expectations be the reason you stop. Dare to dream and be brave enough to chase what you love,” she wrote.

She hopes her solo journey will inspire more people to believe that travelling the world is possible with careful planning, courage, and determination, even without wealth or a travel companion.
