Varalakshmi Viratham, a fasting dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, is observed during the auspicious month of Aadi by married and unmarried women.

This fasting is observed to get the blessing of Goddess Lakshmi, who is known as the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, luxury, beauty, and fertility.

"As per the legends, it is believed that the right way to follow this fasting was revealed by the goddess herself to one of her devotees, Charumathy - who led an exemplary life as a good daughter, wife, daughter-in-law, and mother."

The first rule of Varalakshmi Vratham is a person should take up the fasting willingly, and should not be forced into conducting the prayers.

In case the prayers could not be followed on this day due to any unavoidable circumstances, the devotees can opt to observe the fasting on the 'Friday' which falls during Navarathiri.
