Sri Asdhatasa Buja Mahaletchumi Thurgai Parameswary Amman : 'Pay As You Wish' Concept In This Temple Is Winning Devotees' Hearts

Hidden amidst the peaceful surroundings of Bukit Damansara - Sri Asdhatasa Buja Mahaletchumi Thurgai Parameswary Amman Alayam has been a place of faith, hope, and spiritual comfort for generations of devotees. 

Ashtadasabhuja Durga is known as the supreme warrior manifestation invoked in scriptures like the Devi Mahatmya to vanquish the buffalo demon Mahishasura. Worshipping this rare 18-handed form is believed to bring benefits from all three supreme goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati and Kali.

According to the temple chairman, Mr. Gunasilan, Sri Thurgai Amman Alayam is the first temple in Malaysia to celebrate all four Navaratris: Shyamala (Gupta), Vasantha (Chitirai), Ashadha (Gupta also known as Varahi) and Sharada (Maha). This special tradition allows devotees to worship the Divine Durga Amma different forms (Aavatharam) throughout these 9 days. Each day she will be glowing in santhanakappu (sandalwood decoration).

One of the temple's most meaningful initiatives is its "Pay As You Wish" concept. Unlike many temples, there are no fixed charges for archanais or ubayams. Devotees are free to contribute any amount based on their ability and willingness. This significantly allow devottes to show their gratitude in all forms of respect in lieu of their abilities.

This thoughtful initiative shows the temple management's belief that devotion should never come with a financial burden. Every devotee, regardless of their financial circumstances, is welcomed with open arms to offer prayers, seek the blessings of the Divine Mother, and participate in temple rituals without hesitation.

One of the temple's most remarkable features is its rare 18-handed form of Goddess Thurgai Amman, a powerful manifestation of Shakti that symbolises courage, protection, wisdom and unconditional compassion. Devotees from all walks of life visit the temple seeking her blessings for health, marriage, family harmony, career success and protection from life's challenges.

The first NINE hands of Goddess Thurgai Amman hold sacred weapons and symbols that represent her strength and power. She carries the Trishul (Trident), which represents the removal of evil; the Sudarshana Chakra (Discus), symbolising justice and righteousness; the Gada (Mace), representing strength; the Sword, which removes ignorance and ego; the Bow and Arrow, symbolising focus and determination; the Paash (Noose), representing control over negativity and attachment; the Shankha (Conch), representing the divine sound of creation; and the Kamandal (Holy Water Pot), symbolising purity and life.

The other NINE hands represent her protection, compassion, and blessings. They hold the Ghanta (Bell), which removes negative energy; the Padma (Lotus), symbolising purity and spiritual growth; the Shakti or Spear, representing courage and divine power; the Shield, offering protection; the Vajra (Thunderbolt), symbolising strong faith and inner strength; the Parashu (Battle Axe), representing the removal of worldly attachments; the Naag (Snake), symbolising spiritual energy; the Japamala (Rosary), representing prayer and meditation; and the Amruta Kalasa (Divine Nectar Pot), representing blessings, prosperity, and eternal life.

Together, the 18 hands of Goddess Thurgai Amman represent her complete power to protect devotees, remove obstacles, destroy evil, and bless them with courage, wisdom, and peace.

The temple also conducts several special prayers throughout the month, drawing hundreds of devotees who come to offer their prayers.

To understand more about the temple's significance, we also spoke to the temple priest, Sharvin Gurukkal who shared that countless devotees have experienced the boundless grace of Durga Amma after offering sincere prayers.

The temple priest also shared stories often spoken of among devotees. During poojai hours, some have claimed to witness the gentle presence of an elderly woman peacefully combing her hair within the temple grounds. While these experiences remain deeply personal and cannot be independently verified, many devotees believe they are blessed moments that strengthen their faith in the Divine Mother's ever-present protection.

Whether one visits seeking answers, comfort or simply a moment of peace, Sri Thurgai Amman Alayam continues to welcome every devotee with open arms. Among them is devoted Mr Kogulan, who described how the Goddess answered heartfelt prayers during some of the most difficult moments of his life. He believes it was not merely coincidence, but the Divine Mother's compassionate grace that guided him through his struggles and fulfilled his wishes.

He also recalled the moment involving an elderly woman who repeatedly appeared in his dreams, urging him to visit the temple. Only after following those divine signs did, he truly experience a deep connection with Durga Amma.

Many devotees say that once they stand before Amma and experience the serenity of her divine presence, leaving the temple is never easy for a part of their heart always remains at her sacred feet. It is a reminder that Durga Amma never abandons those who surrender to her with devotion.

Today, the temple continues to uphold its values of compassion, kindness, and inclusiveness. By maintaining its "Pay as You Wish" approach and not imposing fixed charges for prayers and poojais, the temple ensures that everyone can seek the Durgai Amman's blessings regardless of their financial situation.
