AR Murugadoss’s 2005 directorial Ghajini remains a landmark in Tamil cinema, celebrated for its gripping storyline, intense performances, and commercial success. Starring Suriya and Asin Thottumkal, the action thriller made waves at the box office and cemented its place as a blockbuster. However, what many may not know is that Suriya wasn’t the director’s first choice for the lead role.
According to reports, the role was initially offered to nearly a dozen actors, including prominent names like Ajith Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Mahesh Babu. These actors, for various reasons, declined the film. One of them, R. Madhavan, later revealed his reason during a candid social media interaction with Suriya.
As reported by Galatta, Madhavan shared that he turned down Ghajini as he couldn’t connect with the second half of the script. “I was offered Ghajini, but I told director AR Murugadoss sir that the second half didn’t work for me,” he said.
Reflecting on how the role eventually went to Suriya, Madhavan expressed his admiration, stating, “I had seen you in Kaakha Kaakha and was genuinely happy when I found out you were doing Ghajini. You proved that the role had gone to the right person.”
He also recalled Suriya’s impressive dedication to the role, noting that the actor's commitment was so intense it left a lasting impact on him. “I watched the hard work you put into achieving your six-pack abs. You went without salt for almost a week just to get the desired physique. It made me question if I could have done the same. Your discipline and transformation were inspiring,” Madhavan added.
