Many cultures around the world have set unwritten rules on the 'marriage ages' of girls and boys. The moment someone hits the age, questions start pouring in from relatives and friends on when they can taste 'kalyana sappadu' or wedding food.
Parents or elders in the family begin pestering their kids to get married and at some point, attending weddings will become a nightmare. Whether or not you are married, we are sure you can relate to this!
So, the real question is, when is the right age to get married?
Research Says 28 - 32
A new research brings light to this topic. Couples who get married between the ages 28 to 32 are less likely to get a divorce, at least in the first 5 years of the marriage. The research was conducted by Nicholas Wolfinger, a sociologist at the University of Utah.According to Slate, Wolfinger's findings are the Goldilocks theory of marriage!
"Getting married too early is risky, but so is getting married too late. Your late 20s and early 30s are just right."
Is it Wise to Wait Until You are Ready?
Usually, maturity and financial stability come with age, both of which are necessary for a successful marriage. But getting married too late is also associated with higher rates of divorce because as people grow older it's harder to change or comprise with the spouse.
So, is it wise to wait until you are financially-stable and emotionally-mature? The answer is YES and NO. Ultimately, it comes down to what are your expectations in a marriage.
Do you want a companion to share your bitter-sweet moments?
Do you want financial and emotional security?
Do you want to have children?
Do you want a partner to travel the world or start a business?
Depending on what your expectations are, you can easily decide when is the right time to get married. For eg., if all you want is to start your life with someone you love, you don't need to buy a huge bungalow or save up thousands before tying the knot. A small apartment with sufficient savings is enough to kickstart your marriage life.
In the end, it's your life. Keeping in mind the drawbacks of getting married too early or late, decide what you think is the best for you and your spouse's future.
