At just 25 years old, Nishan Velupillay is preparing to step onto football’s biggest stage, the FIFA World Cup.
The Melbourne Victory winger has officially been named in Australia’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, becoming the first footballer of Tamil heritage to compete at the prestigious tournament.
For many football fans, his selection is more than a sporting achievement, it is a story of identity and dreams crossing generations.
So, who exactly is Nishan Velupillay?
Born and raised in Melbourne, Nishan comes from a diverse cultural background. His father, Sasinath Velupillay, is of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage with Malaysian roots, while his mother, Gillian, is Anglo-Indian.
His football journey began humbly.
Nishan attended Mazenod College in Mulgrave and started developing his game through Glen Eira FC before progressing into Melbourne Victory’s youth academy. Years of hard work eventually earned him a place in the club’s senior squad, where he steadily established himself as one of Australia’s exciting young talents.

His breakthrough on the international stage came in October 2024.
Handed his senior debut by Socceroos coach Tony Popovic during a World Cup qualifier against China, Nishan entered the match in the 83rd minute. Just seven minutes later, he found the net to seal a 3-1 victory for Australia, a dream debut that immediately announced his arrival.
Since then, he has collected seven senior caps and scored three goals, all of them in World Cup qualifiers.
The trust shown by coach Popovic has now culminated in Nishan earning a place in Australia’s final 26-man World Cup squad.
Seventeen players in this squad will be making their FIFA World Cup debut, and Nishan is proudly among them. Melbourne Victory Director of Football John Didulica praised the winger’s remarkable rise.

“Nish has worked exceptionally hard since he first walked into this club as a junior footballer to put himself in this position,” Didulica said.
“I couldn’t think of any player more deserving of this honour.”
Australia will begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign in Group D alongside Turkey, the United States and Paraguay, with their opening fixture against Turkey scheduled for June 13 in Vancouver.
For many within the Tamil diaspora around the world, Nishan’s selection carries deep emotional significance.
While Tamil Eelam competes internationally under CONIFA, there remains no pathway to the FIFA World Cup under FIFA’s structure.
Yet beyond heritage and headlines, Nishan Velupillay’s story is ultimately about his dedication and passion.
From local football fields in Melbourne to football’s grandest stage, his rise reminds us that dreams built through discipline, patience and hard work can one day become history.
