An inspiring story of a Malaysian with a learning disability has touched hearts nationwide after his sister shared his remarkable journey on social media.
Growing up, he struggled in school as a slow learner. He faced both physical and emotional bullying and often felt left behind academically. Despite these challenges, he refused to give up. He retook the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination ten times before finally passing.
In a post shared by his sister, Dr. Ainun Nasihah, she recalled how her brother told their mother that his tenth attempt would be his last. “He was born breech, and the delayed delivery caused developmental issues. On his 10th attempt, he told our mum this might be his last. He cried many times,” she wrote.
But his determination didn’t stop there. He went on to attempt the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) twice before eventually earning a place at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, where he completed his degree. Later, he obtained a teaching diploma (DPLI), paving the way for a career he had long dreamed of.
Along the way, he worked various odd jobs, as a security guard in hospitals, schools, and old folks’ homes, and even helped his father in the paddy fields. Every step was part of his quiet but persistent journey towards a better future.
Dr. Ainun shared one of the most emotional moments from his journey: the day of his interview to become a teacher. When asked about his OKU card, he openly explained that he had it due to a learning disability. After the interview, he ran straight to his mother and broke down in tears, a mix of relief and the feeling that he was finally nearing the end of a long struggle.
At 37, he officially became a school teacher, proving that success doesn’t have a deadline and that everyone moves at their own pace.
His sister acknowledged the strong support he received from their family, but also emphasised the power of self-belief. “You can’t truly help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves, even if the whole world tries. In his case, he chose to help himself, and that’s how he was able to succeed.”
She also offered gentle advice for anyone going through hard times:
“Life comes in phases. When one phase ends, we move on to the next. Even if it feels slow, we’re still moving, at our own pace, on our own timeline. So just keep going. Whatever difficulties you’re facing, remember it’s just a phase and it will pass. Just keep going.”
This kind of story indeed deserve a shout out and special mention on all platforms.
