Anticipation and excitement is buzzing ahead of Netball Super League’s (NSL 2025) new season. The fourth edition will commence from 1st to 23rd February 2025 at Stadium Juara, Kuala Lumpur. The league will take place for four weeks where eight teams will compete to be crowned champions this year.
The eight teams participating are similar as the previous season; Johor Jewels, KL Wildcats, Selangor Angels, Perak Phoenix, Negeri Sembilan Venom, Pahang Tulips, Terengganu Marvels and Putrajaya Dynamites.
Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh considers NSL successfully open a new dimension for netball towards a professional league. NSL has become a constant platform to discover new talents and propel them to be the country’s finest in netball.
“Astro not only plays a role in promoting and popularizing the sport, but partnerships with associations have seen the increase and growth in NSL’s commercial value and this prestigious league should be applauded. The effort is parallel with the government and the ministry’s vision to enhance sports development and gender equality especially towards female athletes.”
“I’m confident the presence of professional import players will elevate the league’s quality on top of motivating players’ desire to be the best professionally. A competitive league such as NSL is the perfect platform for players’ selection ahead of SEA Games Thailand 2025,” she added.
President of Malaysian Netball Association, Alwiyah Talib believes the merging of local and 15 import players this year compared to 11 in the previous edition will surely elevate and electrify the league this season. All eight teams have import player participation which ensures added competitive edge.
“This year, we have world class import players including from number one ranked country, Australia. Among other import players are from South Africa, Uganda, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Thailand and Bostwana. Their presence has a positive impact in improving the standard of netball and the league,”she said.
Meanwhile, Astro’s Head of Sports, Nicholas John said, since its introduction in 2021, NSL’s revolutionization is monumental especially from netball supporters at the stadium which witnessed 71% increase in ticket sales.
“The past three seasons reached 9 million in viewership on Astro Arena, meanwhile viewership on digital platform Astro Go peaked at 7 million views. NSL also has a significant impact on the rise of subscription on sooka with an increase of almost 23 percent. We will also widen our digital content outreach where NSL captures high numbers on social media; several video clips captured more than a million views on TikTok in the previous season.”
“Since a year ago, we have a partnership with W-Sports and that has brought NSL’s brand to international level. The league was broadcasted to 30 countries including the Middle East, Africa and Europe. This collaboration has become a benchmark in providing the best quality in broadcasting.”
“We are also in talks to add another trophy in the near future with the NSL Regional Cup. This competition will witness invitational teams from Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and many others compete. To make this a reality, we need support from corporate sectors and the government to ensure the sport and the league reach greater heights and be more competitive and prestigious,” he said.
He added, Astro is also strengthening netball’s grassroot development through Klinik NSL which will be held at various locations and selected schools. Participants will be guided by renowned coaches and these students will also get a chance to meet their netball idols.
