Did you know that the majestic Golden Chariot (Thanga Ther) tradition began at the revered Palani Murugan Temple in Tamil Nadu?

This resplendent chariot, crafted from gold and silver, was a generous offering by Mr. V.V.C.R. Murugesa Mudaliar from Erode, donated on 17 August 1947. Since then, it has become one of the most visually and spiritually captivating aspects of the temple’s rituals.

Atop this glittering chariot stands the elegant bronze idol of Chinnakumarar (Palani Murugan), seated on a golden peacock with its wings gracefully spread. The sight of this divine form radiating light and energy during processions is truly a spiritual marvel.

The Thanga Ther is paraded with grandeur around the temple’s prakaram (outer corridor) during Krittigai days and six special festival days throughout the year. However, it is notably not used during festivals such as Thaipoosam, Panguni Uthiram, Dasara (10 days), Soora Samharam, and Karthikai Deepam.

The procession is an immersive spiritual experience, accompanied by the temple’s asthana nadaswaram, the resonant chants of Thiruppugazh bajans, and a sea of devotees drawn to the chariot’s brilliance and Murugan’s divine aura.

The lit-up golden chariot, gliding through the temple premises, leaves all who witness it in awe. It is not just a ritual but a timeless expression of devotion, beauty, and spiritual celebration in honour of Lord Murugan.
