Expired Malaysian Passport While You're Abroad? Here’s What You Should Do

Emergency Certificate (EC).

Whether you're overseas for work, travel, or family matters, an expired Malaysian passport is not necessarily a major setback. In such situations, your next step is to contact the nearest Malaysian embassy, high commission, or consulate general.

These missions are authorised to issue an Emergency Certificate (EC), also known as an Emergency Travel Document. It serves as a temporary solution for Malaysians who need to return home when their passport is no longer valid.

Although procedures differ slightly between countries, travellers will generally be required to provide:

  • Expired passport
  • MyKad or other proof of citizenship (birth certificate/old IC)
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs
  • Flight itinerary or confirmed booking back to Malaysia
  • Form IM.42 (usually provided at the mission)

The fee for an EC is RM50, payable in the local currency of the country where it is issued. However, it is advisable to call or email the mission in advance to confirm specific requirements and document availability.

Travellers should also note that an EC is not a replacement for a passport. It is a single-use document strictly for returning to Malaysia and cannot be used for tourism, work, or travel to third countries. In addition, not every country recognises the EC for exit or transit purposes, and extra documentation may be requested. It is important to verify recognition by the host country, immigration authorities, airports, and airlines before relying on it for travel.

Most ECs are issued with a validity period of a few months, but the document becomes invalid once used to re-enter Malaysia. Travelling with an EC may also involve additional checks at the airport. Some airlines require verification before boarding, so informing the airline early and carrying printed proof of issuance is recommended. Arriving at the airport well ahead of departure can also help avoid delays.

Upon arrival in Malaysia, immigration clearance is typically smooth as officers are familiar with EC holders. However, once home, travellers will still need to renew their Malaysian passport, as the EC does not replace it. Anyone expecting to travel again shortly should renew their passport as soon as possible.

Malaysia allows passport renewal up to six months before expiry, and most applicants can complete the process online through the MyOnline Passport portal, making renewal faster and more convenient.
