In the sacred soil of Ramanathapuram stands the spiritually radiant Thiruvadanai Aadhi Rathneswarar Temple, one of the 253rd Thevaram Paadal Petra Sthalams and the 9th holy shrine of Pandiya Nadu. For centuries, devotees have walked into this divine temple carrying burdens in their hearts and walked out with peace in their souls.
Known in ancient times as Aadaanai, this blessed place has been praised through many names such as Parijatha Vanam, Vilvavanam, Markandeya Puram, Gomuktheesam and Mukthipuram. Each name reflects the divine incidents and blessings connected to this holy land.
The temple’s name itself carries a touching story of redemption. Varunan’s son Vaaruni was once cursed by Sage Durvasa and transformed into a strange form with an elephant’s body and goat’s head. In pain and shame, he came here and surrendered before Lord Shiva. Through sincere worship, his curse was removed and he regained his original form. Because of this miracle, the place became known as Aadu + Aanai = Aadaanai, later called Thiruvadanai.
This temple reminds devotees that no matter how difficult life becomes, surrendering to the Divine can restore dignity, peace and hope.

Another sacred legend tells of Surya Bhagavan. On Brahma’s advice, the Sun God came here, created a holy theertham and worshipped Lord Shiva. He offered prayers to a Shiva Lingam believed to have manifested in the form of a rare blue Rathnam. Even today, devotees believe the Lingam reveals a bluish glow during the Uchi Kala milk abhishekam.
During the Tamil month of Masi, the rays of the Sun gently fall upon both Lord Shiva and Ambal, a sight that fills hearts with devotion and wonder.
The presiding deity here is Sri Aadhi Rathneswarar, also worshipped as Sri Ajagajeswarar. Mother Goddess blesses devotees as Sri Snehavalli and Sri Ambayiravalli. Those seeking harmony in marriage, relief from Venus-related doshas and prosperity often visit this temple, as it is revered as a powerful Sukra Parihara Sthalam.
Saints and sages have been drawn to this sacred place through the ages. Thirugnanasambandar sang Thevaram hymns here. Vallalar praised the Lord with devotion. Arunagirinathar offered soul-stirring verses to Murugan of this temple. Great beings such as Kamadhenu, Vasishtar, Manu, Markandeyar, Agasthiyar and Arjunan are believed to have worshipped here.
Spread across nearly 10 acres, the temple welcomes devotees with a majestic 9-tier Rajagopuram rising 130 feet into the sky. As one steps inside, every pillar, every corridor and every sannadhi speaks of timeless faith. The air itself feels ancient and sacred.
Murugan with His consorts, Vinayagar, Somaskandar, Dakshinamurthy, Bhairavar, Chandran, Saneeswarar, Maha Vishnu, Lakshmi and the Saptamatrikas all grace the temple precincts, blessing devotees from every direction.
This temple is more than stone and structure. It is a place where broken hearts seek healing, where prayers become tears, and where tears become grace.
Those who stand before Aadhi Rathneswarar often leave with one silent feeling, that Lord Shiva still listens.
