Vaikunta Ekadashi, one of the most sacred Ekadashis in the Hindu calendar, marks the final Ekadashi of the year 2025. This auspicious day falls on Tuesday, December 30. While one Vaikunta Ekadashi was observed at the beginning of the year, devotees are blessed with another opportunity to observe this sacred viratam at the end of the year. Vaikunta Ekadashi is also known as Pudratha Ekadashi.
Observed during the holy month of Margazhi, Vaikunta Ekadashi holds immense spiritual significance. It is believed that even those who are unable to observe Ekadashi fasting regularly throughout the year will receive the Lord’s special grace if they fast, stay awake through the night, and chant the divine names of Lord Vishnu on this day. Such devotion is said to wash away sins, increase spiritual merit, and bless devotees with prosperity, harmony, and ultimately, a place in Vaikunta.
For those who are unable to observe a complete fast or remain awake all night, sincere and simple worship performed with true devotion is believed to be enough to receive the Lord’s full blessings.
Here are five sacred practices to observe on Vaikunta Ekadashi:
Abhishekam of Lord Vishnu with Panchamirtham
On Vaikunta Ekadashi, performing abhishekam for Lord Vishnu using Panchamirtham - milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar is considered highly auspicious. If there is no idol at home, the Panchamirtha can be lovingly offered before the Lord while praying with devotion. This sacred offering is believed to remove obstacles, especially in business and career, and open doors to new opportunities.
Writing a mantra on a betel leaf and offering it
Write the mantra ‘Om Vishnuve Namah’ on a betel leaf and place it at the feet of Lord Vishnu during puja. After worship, keeping the betel leaf in a money box or cupboard is believed to invite financial stability and growth into the household.
Feeding the cow
After offering a banana to Lord Vishnu and completing the puja, feeding a cow with ghee-coated roti and jaggery is considered a sacred act. This practice is believed to bring good health, happiness, and protection to children and family members.
Tulasi worship and lighting a ghee lamp
In the evening, light a ghee lamp near the Tulsi plant and circumambulate it seven times while praying with devotion. Writing ‘Shri’ on Tulsi leaves and offering them to Lord Vishnu is said to bring prosperity and divine blessings. Worshipping Lord Perumal with Tulsi or adorning him with a Tulsi garland on this day is believed to bestow the grace of both Mahavishnu and Mahalakshmi.
Lighting a lamp under the royal tree
In the evening, light a lamp using mustard oil or kerosene under the royal tree and chant the sacred mantra ‘Om Namo Narayana’. This simple act is believed to bring peace of mind, remove negativity, and usher in positive changes in life.
May this sacred Vaikunta Ekadashi fill every home with devotion, peace, and divine grace, and may Lord Vishnu bless all with prosperity.
