Varamahalakshmi is one of the most revered forms of Goddess Lakshmi, worshipped with deep devotion by devotees seeking blessings for prosperity, happiness, family well-being and abundance.
Her name itself carries a beautiful meaning. “Varam” means a boon or blessing, while “Mahalakshmi” refers to Goddess Lakshmi, the divine embodiment of wealth, prosperity and auspiciousness. For devotees, Varamahalakshmi is not simply associated with material wealth. Her blessings are also sought for peace within the family, good fortune, health, harmony and the fulfilment of sincere prayers.
According to a popular legend associated with Varamahalakshmi Vratam, there once lived a woman named Charumati, known for her devotion, humility and love for her family. Although she was devoted to her husband and children, her family faced financial difficulties and often struggled to meet their needs. One night, Charumati had a divine dream in which Goddess Varamahalakshmi appeared before her.
The Goddess blessed Charumati and instructed her to observe a sacred puja in Her honour. When Charumati awoke, she shared the divine experience with her husband. Together, they decided to follow the Goddess's instructions and perform the puja with faith and devotion. They invited relatives and other devotees to join them, and the household was filled with prayers, offerings and the chanting of sacred mantras.
Pleased with their sincere devotion, Goddess Varamahalakshmi is believed to have blessed Charumati and her family with prosperity and abundance. From that day, the family was said to have experienced a life of greater happiness and well-being.
The story of Charumati is remembered not simply as a tale of receiving wealth, but as a reminder of what sincere devotion can mean.
For many devotees, the Varamahalakshmi Puja is a time to pray for the well-being of their loved ones, express gratitude for what they have received and seek the Goddess's blessings for the days ahead.
The Goddess is traditionally worshipped with flowers, fruits, sweets, sacred offerings and prayers. Women, in particular, observe the Varamahalakshmi Vratam with great devotion, praying for the welfare of their husbands, children and families.
The festival is traditionally observed on a Friday before the full moon during the month of Shravana, although the exact date varies according to the Hindu calendar and regional traditions.
At the heart of Varamahalakshmi worship is the belief that true abundance extends beyond material possessions. It can be found in a peaceful home, a healthy family, loving relationships, meaningful work and the ability to share what we have with others.
For devotees, praying to Varamahalakshmi is therefore an expression of both faith and gratitude asking not only for blessings, but also for the wisdom to use those blessings well.
