Driven by sheer willpower and passion, Vasanthi prepared for her journey by relying on YouTube videos to learn trekking essentials and fitness routines. Additionally, she took the initiative to learn Hindi to communicate effectively throughout her adventure.
According to Manorama, Vasanthi dedicated herself to an intensive four-month training regimen. Her daily routine included walking for three hours every morning, complemented by evening walks of 5 to 6 kilometers with friends.
Her journey began from Bengaluru to Kathmandu, but a canceled flight to Lukla posed an early challenge. Undeterred, she received help from a German couple who guided her to Surkhet. From there, she embarked on a trek filled with steep ascents, narrow passages, and harsh conditions.
Setting out from Surke, Nepal, on February 15, Vasanthi successfully reached the South Base Camp on February 23. Along the way, she met various trekkers, including a father-son duo from Thiruvananthapuram.
Marking her achievement in true Keralite style, Vasanthi posted a photograph of herself on Instagram, standing triumphantly at the base camp while wearing traditional Kerala attire over her trekking suit. Her post proudly read, “Everest Base Camp in Kerala attire.”
Funding her trips through her tailoring work, Vasanthi’s resourcefulness and dedication were evident even before her expedition. She entrusted her gold ornaments to her son, advising him to pawn them for emergency funds if necessary. This preparedness enabled her to arrange a helicopter ride back to Lukla when needed.
Vasanthi Cheruveettil’s story serves as an inspiration to those who dare to dream and work relentlessly towards their goals, regardless of age or circumstance.
