The implementation of Undi18 and automatic voter registration will take effect on Dec 15.

This according to a Federal Government Gazette dated Dec 1, published by the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

The enforcement of Section 3 of the Constitution Amendment Act (2019) Act will see the minimum voting age set at 18, from the current 21, and also allow for automatic voter registration.

It is worth noting that the proposed amendments were approved at a parliamentary meeting in July 2019, but were not implemented then.

Last Sept 3, the Kuching High Court ordered Undi 18 and the automatic voter registration to be implemented by Dec 31 this year.

Following this, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar assured that both Undi18 and automatic voter registration will be implemented before Dec 31, failing which Putrajaya could be subject to contempt of court.

Despite the gazettement, youths aged 18 will still not be able to vote in the Sarawak state election on Dec 18, as the implementation date of the gazette will only be on January 3 next year, Malay Mail quoted Wan Junaidi saying.
