Key stakeholders from various sectors of Tamil Cinema, including the Film Producers’ Council, Theatre Owners Group, Multiplex Owners Alliance, and Distributors’ Union, convened for a strategic meeting this past Monday. The objective was to ignite dialogue and establish definitive plans to advance the industry.

Amid escalating production costs and actor salaries, the council committed to completing all current projects, irrespective of their development phase. Effective August 15, no new filming will commence; in fact, all film-related activities are temporarily suspended. The target is to conclude all ongoing productions by the end of October, after which, starting November 1, all film shootings will cease entirely.

Issues were raised regarding performers and crew members who have received upfront payments from various production houses but failed to attend filming sessions. Notably, actor and director Dhanush was cited in this context. Consequently, the Council has decided to impose specific restrictions on Dhanush, advising producers of his forthcoming films to seek prior approval before casting him in their projects.

Renowned actor Dhanush may face a significant setback following a crucial decision by the Tamil Film Producers Council. Numerous production companies have voiced concerns, alleging that Dhanush has been accepting advances while delaying film productions to secure higher remuneration from Telugu film producers.

Additionally, the council addressed the impact of prematurely streaming movies on digital platforms, which adversely affects cinema attendance and financially burdens exhibitors and distributors. To counter this, the council has resolved to delay the digital release of star-studded movies by eight weeks after their theatrical debut. This strategy aims to attract audiences back to cinemas and sustain box office revenues for an extended period.
